How to Remove Line Breaks from PDF Text in Seconds (Word, Google Docs & Online)

Remove Line Breaks: the copied PDF text, the clean result side by side, and the options that decide which breaks stay.

Why PDF text breaks at every line

A PDF does not know what a paragraph is. It records where each line of text is drawn on the page, so when you copy a passage, most viewers end every printed line with a line break — even in the middle of a sentence. Paste that into an email or a document and you get a ragged column that stops a few words short of the margin.

Plain-text emails do the same thing for a different reason: many mail programs wrap lines before sending. RFC 5322 recommends a 78-character line limit for email messages. Cleaning copied hard wraps follows the same process.

Six short copied lines on the left become two flowing paragraphs on the right

The fastest way is a cleaner that knows which breaks to keep. With Remove Line Breaks:

  1. Paste the copied text into the Original pane.
  2. Leave Keep paragraphs on. Single line breaks become spaces; a blank line still starts a new paragraph.
  3. Turn on Guess paragraphs only if the PDF copied with no blank lines at all. It starts a paragraph after a short line that ends a sentence.
  4. Leave Keep list items on so bullets and numbered steps stay on their own lines.
  5. Copy the clean text or download it as a TXT file.

The original stays beside the result, so you can see every change before you copy, and nothing is uploaded. If a scanned PDF has no selectable text, run OCR first: this tool cleans pasted text and does not extract it from images.

How to remove line breaks in Word

Word can do it with Find and Replace (Ctrl+H on Windows), using its special characters: ^p is a paragraph mark and ^l a manual line break.

  1. Replace ^p^p with a placeholder that never appears in the text, such as ##. This protects real paragraph breaks.
  2. Replace ^p with a single space. This joins the broken lines.
  3. Replace ## with ^p^p. The paragraphs come back.

If step 2 finds nothing, the text uses manual line breaks: repeat the steps with ^l. This works, but it also merges every bullet point into the line before it, and you have to undo three replacements if you get it wrong.

What about Google Docs?

Google Docs supports Find and replace, including regular expressions, but a pasted PDF line usually arrives as its own paragraph, and joining paragraphs that way is unreliable. The quicker path is to clean the text first, then paste the result into the document.

Keep the structure that matters

Removing every line break is easy; removing only the wrong ones is the hard part.

In the copied textWhat you wantHow to get it
A break in mid-sentenceJoined with a spaceAlways on
A blank line between paragraphsKeptKeep paragraphs
No blank lines at allParagraphs guessedGuess paragraphs
Bullets and numbered stepsOne item per lineKeep list items
A word split by a hyphen at a line endRejoinedRepair split words
A bulleted list with wrapped items, cleaned so each bullet sits on one line

Be careful with hyphen repair: well-made and e-mail are real hyphenated words, so read the result before you copy it.

When to keep the line breaks

Some text needs its line breaks: code, poems, song lyrics, addresses and anything laid out as a table. Clean only the prose around them, or paste those parts separately.

Multi-column PDFs are the other trap. Copying across two columns interleaves their lines, and no cleaner can untangle that afterwards — select one column at a time instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why does text copied from a PDF have line breaks everywhere?

A PDF stores where each line of text is drawn on the page, not where the sentences flow. When you copy it, most viewers turn the end of every printed line into a line break.

How do I remove line breaks but keep paragraphs?

Replace single line breaks with spaces and leave double line breaks alone. An online cleaner such as Remove Line Breaks does this with Keep paragraphs on; in Word you can do it with three find-and-replace passes.

How do I remove line breaks in Word?

Open Find and Replace, replace ^p^p with a placeholder such as ##, replace ^p with a space, then replace ## with ^p^p. Use ^l instead of ^p if the text contains manual line breaks.

Can I remove line breaks from a scanned PDF?

A scanned PDF is a picture of text, so there is nothing to copy. Run OCR first, then clean the text it produces.

Will removing line breaks break my bullet points?

A plain find and replace will merge every bullet into one line. A cleaner that recognises list items, such as Remove Line Breaks with Keep list items on, keeps each bullet on its own line.
