How to Make Text with a Transparent Background (PNG) in Seconds
What a transparent text PNG is
A transparent text PNG is an image that contains only your letters. Every pixel around them is see-through, so when you place the file on a photo, a slide or a video, the background shows through instead of a white box.
That works because PNG stores an alpha channel: alongside red, green and blue, each pixel carries how opaque it is. JPG has no alpha channel, which is why a "transparent" JPG always comes out with a solid background.
How to make text with a transparent background in seconds
The quickest route is a tool that draws the text straight into a PNG. On Text to PNG:
- Type or paste the words. A title, a quote or a label — one or two short lines work best.
- Pick a font. Search the Google Fonts library or keep a device font. The preview redraws as soon as the font loads.
- Set the color and an outline. An outline is drawn outside the letters, so text stays readable on busy photos.
- Keep the background on Transparent. The checkerboard in the preview marks transparent pixels; it is not part of the file.
- Download or copy the PNG. Choose 2× for retina screens and print, or an exact size such as 1080 × 1080.
The whole thing runs in your browser, so the text is never uploaded and there is no watermark on the file. For commercial projects, check the font's license; the Google Fonts licensing FAQ explains usage and redistribution.
Make it readable on any background
A transparent text PNG has no background of its own, so it borrows whatever sits behind it. Three habits keep it legible:
- White text, dark outline. This pairing reads on bright skies and dark shadows in the same photo.
- Preview light text on dark. Light text on a white page looks like an empty image. Text to PNG switches to a dark checkerboard for light text automatically.
- Leave a little padding. Some apps crop images tightly; padding stops them clipping the outline.
Using the PNG in Canva, Google Slides and video editors
| App | How to add the text PNG | Transparency kept? |
|---|---|---|
| Canva | Uploads → upload the PNG → drag it onto the design | Yes |
| Google Slides | Insert → Image → Upload from computer | Yes |
| PowerPoint / Keynote | Insert → Pictures, or paste after Copy image | Yes |
| CapCut, Premiere, DaVinci | Import as an overlay or picture-in-picture layer | Yes |
| Word / Google Docs | Insert → Image; set wrapping to "In front of text" | Yes |
In Canva, downloading your own design with a transparent background is a paid feature. Making the text PNG first and uploading it gets you the same layer on a free account.
PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG?
Use PNG for text overlays: every app opens it and it keeps both the transparency and sharp letter edges. JPG cannot be transparent. WebP can, but some desktop apps still refuse it. SVG is ideal for vector logos, but a font may not travel with the file, so the text can render differently on someone else's machine. The MDN image format guide explains the formats and their browser support.
Choosing a size
For overlays, let the image trim itself to the words and export at 2×, so it stays sharp when you scale it up. When a platform asks for exact pixels, pick the size first and let the text fit it:
- 1080 × 1080 — square social posts
- 1080 × 1920 — stories, Reels and TikTok
- 1280 × 720 — YouTube thumbnails
- 4500 × 5400 — common print-on-demand shirt files
Text to PNG has these as presets, plus a custom width and height up to 8,000 px. With Fit text on, the words grow or shrink to fill the image and stay centered.
Common problems
The PNG has a white box around it. The background was set to White, or the file was saved as JPG. Export again with Transparent selected.
The letters look soft after resizing. The PNG was scaled up past its pixel size. Export at 2×, or pick an exact size that matches where the image will be used.
The font looks different in my app. The PNG is an image, so the font is baked in and cannot change. If it looks different, the app is showing a different file — check you uploaded the latest export.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make text with a transparent background for free?
Type the text into a text to PNG tool, keep the background set to Transparent, and download the PNG. The letters keep their color and everything around them stays see-through. TextCard does this in your browser with no account or watermark.
Why does my transparent text PNG look blank?
White or light text on a transparent background is invisible in any viewer that shows a white page behind the image. The file is fine: place it on a darker background. The Text to PNG preview shows light text on a dark checkerboard automatically, so you can check it before exporting.
Can I download a transparent PNG from Canva for free?
Canva offers the transparent-background download on its paid plans. A free workaround is to make the text PNG elsewhere and upload it to Canva, where the transparency is kept.
Is a JPG with a white background the same thing?
No. JPG cannot store transparency, so the background is always a solid color. Use PNG whenever the text has to sit on top of something else.
What size should a transparent text PNG be?
Trim it to the text for overlays, or pick an exact size when a platform asks for one: 1080 × 1080 for a square post, 1280 × 720 for a YouTube thumbnail, 4500 × 5400 for many print-on-demand shirts.
